Flying with baby

On Thursday, my family and I are flying to California to visit my husband's family. We are taking our four-year-old and 7-month-old. We flew with our older child when she was a baby, but I think regulations have changed. Does anyone know whether formula or baby food are allowed on planes? Also are you allowed to check a stroller/carseat combo at the departure gate..meaning they stow it on the plane but have it ready for you when you disembark?

Another question is, have any of you, giving your babies Benadryl to help babies sleep on the plane? If so, how much? Any other advice for flying with baby? He'll be a lap baby because we didn't buy a seat for him..would have been an extra $350.
