Baby sign language

This is Kelly. I've been doing basic signing for about a month with my daughter and have yet to see any results. She started clapping yesterday and we've had limited success with the "bye bye" sign, but I'm starting to wonder whether I should stick with it or not. Anyone have any experience of success with this?

Well, I think it depends on a lot of things to make that choice. How old is your baby? Do you do it with everything, all the time or just sometimes. I did this with my son who is now 26months old, and yes it worked. I started at 12months and by 13months he was starting. We watched a video everyday and I picked 2 at the beginning and once he learned one thing it was easy and he picked everything else up easy. We did eat first, with this they get a reward when they do it. He still uses some even though he talks A LOT. Hope this helps.

I too tried and eventually gave up. But keep us posted ~ I'd love to hear about your results

My son did not talk until he was 2 so we did sign language as a means of communication. I didn't start until I realized he would be slow to talk and it did take him a while to pick it up. I focused on one sign at a time based on necessitites. We did signs for eat, sleep, change etc. I also taught him eat the signs for please and thank you. His politeness was so rewarding. Good luck.

I also tried baby sign language with my daughter, who's now 2 1/2, when she was almost a year old. We had limited success with it -- she picked up on a few of the signs but I seemed to know what she wanted without her having to sign, and she never seemed frustrated that she couldn't verbalize what she wanted. She started talking pretty early and, once that happened, she didn't use the signing much anymore. Stick with it for awhile because it does seem to take a while for them to catch on to it. Good luck!!

i have a son with down syndrome. he is 3 now. he does use sign language. it didnt come over night but we were persistant. he knows about 30+ signs. his speech is delayed so this is our only communication. iam just starting to teach his 11mth old sister. amazingly she is a bit slower learning. i would definately keep working the signing since it is considered a 2nd language & you may never know when your child might make friends with someone who cant hear or talk.. good luck

I have heard of this but I have not tried it with any of my children. I think it's a cool thing that some parents are able to do it, but for me personally I thought it was too much trouble. I have not had any problems figuring out what they want. I think if she is doing some of them why not stick with those for now and keep trying the others and even though she is not responding she'll see you doing them and one day she may just do them back. Good Luck!
