babysitting
I, up untill a week ago, worked in a childcare center for almost 10 years. I am now at home doing ods and ends things for friends and family and have decided to start babysitting at home. My two daughters are off to school so I have time and lots of room to care for a few children in my home. Now I just need to find the children and I will be all set! I am asking for any advice on this subject or ideas on how to get started. Thanks, Jamie

Hello. It has been awhile since you posted this but are you currently babysitting? I just lost my longtime babysitter and am looking for someone 2 to 3 days per week?

Sorry, got cut off again LOL... if you advertise like this consistantly, you will eventually wind up with more than just 3 clients, so at that time you will need to think about getting your home daycare license. Lets face it, if you get 3 clients, and they love your services and prices, they wont be able to help it but talk about it to their friends! Good luck in your venture and I hope this has helped. ~~Dawn Lidwell

Sorry, ran out of room LOL. Anyway, that way the mothers get to know you, trust you, and feel safe leaving their child in your care. You also need to figure out your "hours of operation". Many parents find it hard to find affordable day care for their children, but even more find it hard to find affordable night care as well (for those parents who work 3rd shift). I know I wound up quitting my 3rd shift job when I became a mommy because I wasnt about to pay the high costs of childcare just so I could go back to working my job, thats one reason I became self employed at that time. So, figure out your hours of operation. Do some research on what the average daycare prices are and figure out what you are willing to charge for your services that will not break your budget, but will also help families that dont make much money afford your services. Price is a BIG factor in choosing who to allow to babysit as well. Also, the way I figure it, if you advertise like this constantly.

Are you certified in child CPR and First Aid? If not I would start there. Get that certification and that can help you in the long run. Second, like someone above said, word of mouth advertising is the best, so start asking your friends and family to send referrals to you. A few other tips... since I am a work at home mommy myself, maybe some of these you can use to help with getting your name out there :D Like someone above also mentioned, talk to the school teachers, etc and see if they will allow you to give them some flyers advertising that you offer babysitting services to send home with the children at the school. Also you can post flyers just about anywhere! In my experience, pizza shops are great places to post flyers! Put a small ad in the paper advertising your services as well. These ads are usually relatively cheap considering they go into 6 different papers at once :D. Get involved in local playgroups, that way other parents get to know you and trust you, more coninued..

I thought that in the state of PA, you could watch 3 children (not related to you) without a license. Once you hit 4 children in your home, you need a license.

Kelly again. I didn't mean that you needed to be licensed to babysit, but that you would need a license to operate a day care business out of your home. Sorry for the confusion!

I've never heard about getting licensed to babysit, but I do know i'ts a huge commitment. It means being at home all day with very little free time. You might want to be able to prove that you're certified in child CPR and first aid. As for getting started, you might want to contact any mothers that you know from your past day care experiences. Word of mouth is a great reference. Also, talk to families from your children's schools and their teachers to let them know that you're available. Maybe they would let you send something home in the school folders.

This is Kelly. I can't provide specifics, but I'm pretty sure you need to be licensed by the state, so maybe check out some of the .gov websites and see if there are tips to get started, too. Good luck!
