How much to pay?

I was just wondering how much everyone pays their babysitters? We rarely ever go out, but when we do we use our neighbor's teenage granddaughter. She's wonderful! We haven't had her watch our infant yet though. When we do, I was wondering whether we should pay her more? I feel like we already pay her pretty decent...$10 an hour. What do you all think? view post

babysitting

I, up untill a week ago, worked in a childcare center for almost 10 years. I am now at home doing ods and ends things for friends and family and have decided to start babysitting at home. My two daughters are off to school so I have time and lots of room to care for a few children in my home. Now I just need to find the children and I will be all set! I am asking for any advice on this subject or ideas on how to get started. Thanks, Jamie view post

Birth defects/prematurity

Hello Mirror readers, I'm looking for parents whose babies were born premature or with birth defects. I'm writing a story for April Mirror Moms and looking for people to interview. I know there are some wonderful programs available to help premature babies or babies born with birth defects. If you have a story to tell, respond to this. Thank, Kristy MacKaben view post

Breastfeeding/bottle feeding

Hello again Mirror Moms readers, I'm researching a story about breastfeeding. I'm hoping to create a well-balanced story so I would love to talk to moms who: 1. breastfed for at least one year 2. breastfed for a while, but stopped for various reasons 3. bottlefed pretty much from the beginning If you would like to be interviewed for the article, reply to this post. Thanks! view post

Flying with baby

On Thursday, my family and I are flying to California to visit my husband's family. We are taking our four-year-old and 7-month-old. We flew with our older child when she was a baby, but I think regulations have changed. Does anyone know whether formula or baby food are allowed on planes? Also are you allowed to check a stroller/carseat combo at the departure gate..meaning they stow it on the plane but have it ready for you when you disembark? view post

Swaddling?

I was just wondering how long is too long to swaddle. With my daughter (who is now 3), I think we stopped swaddling before 2 months. But, my baby boy just loves to be swaddled. He's 3 months and he still loves it. It just calms him down automatically. Wondering if this can turn into a bad habit?? What are your thoughts. view post

Looking to meet other moms in the area?

Sorry if the title sounds too much like a personals ad! As a mom with a young child, I know it can sometimes be tough to connect with other women who are going through the same thing as you, for friendship and discussion. There's a new organization starting up in the area called Mothers & More that offers playgroups, moms' nights out, family events, and more. Events and activities are held mornings, afternoons, and evenings to accommodate the schedules of both stay-at-home moms and full- or part-time working moms. If you'd like to know more, please come to our first meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, November 6 at the Hollidaysburg Area Public Library. If you can't make it, E-mail Shelly (sls334 at gmail dot com) for more info. view post

Slippery socks!

This is Kelly. I was at a restaurant last night and met another new mom who had her 6-month-old son with her. Upon seeing my daughter's bare feet she turned to her husband and said, "SEE! NO SOCKS!" Then she turned back to me and said, "He always tells me to put socks on, but they just fall off. I've given up." Clearly noticing I had give up too, we both shared a laugh. But now that fall is quickly approaching, I'm sure I'll be changing my tune. Does anyone know of a brand of socks that stand up to tiny feet on the move all the time? Or have any other solutions short of duct tape? view post

Missing Rabbit & Lamb Blanket

Anyone have any idea's. On Thursday 10/30 I visited Giant Eagle in Altoona. My husband laid my 23 month olds blankets on a cart to try and calm her down. Needless to say he forgot to grab them before we shopped. Within 20 minutes they were gone, but nobody turned them in to CS. My daughter is heartbroken, and they no longer make these anymore. I tried replacements, but nothing works. These were her best friends, she depended on them. Now she's associating me leaving as I'm going to disappear too. I'm hoping someone reading this knows someone who might of picked them up. Please I'm begging, they are about 12-14 inches long. The rabbit is pink, and the lamb is yellow. They both have the heads of the animal on them w/little silk paws at the top and little silk feet at the bottom. I am sick over the thought of never seeing them again, no child should ever suffer the loss of a definite security blanket at such a young age. Your help is needed. Thanks. Please post any leads. view post

Naps

My daughter has started resisting her naps. Even though I know she's tired, she cries and struggles but eventually falls asleep. I don't know whether to put her in her crib and close the door or let her continue playing and simply deal with her crankiness. Anyone else run into this problem? view post

Biting

My 2 1/2 year old daughter attends daycare three days a week, and there's another little girl in her class who's bitten my daughter twice. Her teachers don't seem to think this is such a big deal -- but since this is my first child and she's the recipient of the biting, I'm upset by it! Is biting common among young children and is this something I should be concerned about, or is it something that will just pass with their age? view post

Baby sign language

This is Kelly. I've been doing basic signing for about a month with my daughter and have yet to see any results. She started clapping yesterday and we've had limited success with the "bye bye" sign, but I'm starting to wonder whether I should stick with it or not. Anyone have any experience of success with this? view post

Learning to Walk

My one daughter has been walking now for sometime, but she despises shoes. The only shoes she will where are Crocs. They are made of very lightweight foam type material. Well when I say Crocs I mean the $5 Wal-Mart version. Unfortunately she moved on to the next shoe size and I can not find them in the Huntingdon Wal-Mart. Has anybody else seen these anywhere? view post

Preemies

Hi. This is Kate. Grandma Kate. My daughter gave birth to a beautiful daughter recently. While I am thrilled they are both doing very well, I am a bit nervous because the baby was seven weeks early and is so tiny. Has anyone else had preemie jitters? view post

crawling

For the last 3/4 months now my youngest has went from the gi jane type of crawl to now getting on her hands and knees and lunging forward. She is as well pulling herself up sometimes on certain things. I have three other children and I don't remember them taking this long to actually crawl. When did your kids crawl and how long did it take them to get there? view post

Great shoes!

This is Kelly. I've been fighting over shoes with my daughter — I put them on, she pulls them off. Plus, I've noticed they inhibit her ability to walk, and for someone who is just learning how, I don't want to make it any harder. Then a friend sent me a link to Pediped brand shoes. They are expensive, but they're worth it. I found a new pair on eBay for half of what I would've paid on the Pediped site, which is at www.pediped.com. They're flexible. They stay on. And they're adorable too. Highly recommended! view post
