August 1, 2016
By Barbara Cowan - Mirror Moms , Mirror Moms

Get ready for the 2016 edition of the Mirror Moms Expo, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Logan Valley Mall.

Candance Holliday, events marketing manager for the Altoona Mirror, said the focus of the expo is to "empower and educate moms to take care of themselves, as well as to introduce them to resources and programs pertaining to parenting.

"We are looking to build the Mirror Moms brand and let people know about all the information we have to offer through events, social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and, of course, our magazine," she said.

Vendors will provide information on health care, day care, work from home employment, exercise, healthy eating for busy working families, toddler programs and agencies that aid in assisting parents or children in need, Holliday said.

The expo will feature prizes and giveaways and demonstrations.

Demonstrations will be held on the main stage in front of J.C. Penney.

n 10:30 to 11 a.m. - Lauren Kudlawiec,

Kudlawiec, who has a cookbook, "Cooking with Lauren K," writes a monthly food column for the Mirror.

"This is my first year to be a part of this exciting event," Kudlawiec said. "I was honored to be invited to share my family-friendly recipes with moms from our area. I will be demonstrating some recipes from my cookbook. I am a big believer that you can put healthy food on the table that your family will actually eat.

"As a busy new mom, I have to think strategically about my menu and plan how I'm going to find time to prepare meals when I have a baby to care for and a full-time job. It's challenging, but certainly possible. The dishes and samples I will be sharing at the Expo will be some of my go-to favorites."

n 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. - Altoona Area Public Library,, Typhani Russo from the Altoona Area Public Library will hold a storytime for 3- to 6-year-olds and their parents. Books that will be read include "Elmer, Have You Seen Elephant?" and "What To Do If an Elephant Stands on Your Foot."

"There are a few songs we will be singing, as well as an activity where kids have to guess what is inside a bag," Russo said.

n Noon to 12:30 p.m. - Bloom Yoga & Wellness, 1506 12th Ave., Altoona,

Teacher Tracey Roth will present "Mommy & Me Yogadance."

"I use all kinds of music, but I also use props - bouncy balls and instruments. It's so much fun for the kids, and their parents," she said.

Roth and Sharon Bloom, the owner of Bloom Yoga &?Wellness, also will share information about other programs.

n 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. - The Groove Fitness Studio, 505 East 25th Ave., Ivyside Plaza,

Owner Jen Burgmeier will present a demonstration of some Zumba and Piloxing, which is a mix of boxing and pilates. She said Zumba is dance and Piloxing is more of a fitness workout.

"It is something that will appeal to the moms, because most moms want to get in shape and like the social aspect too."
