Lovely Little Pasta Soup
Age: 9 months
Ingredients:
11/2 cups (355 ml) low-sodium chicken broth
2 (22 g) tablespoons uncooked pastina
Stovetop method: Bring broth to a gentle boil and add pastina. Cook, stirring frequently 7 or 8 minutes or until pastina is cooked. Serve warm.
The soup, covered tightly, will last for two or three days in the refrigerator. To reheat, add just a bit of water.
Yield: 4 baby servings, cup (55 grams) each
Each serving contains: 50.8 calories; 0.2 gram total fat; 0.1 gram saturated fat; 1.9 milligrams cholesterol; 225.6 milligrams sodium; 9.6 grams carbohydrates; 0.4 gram dietary fiber; 2.5 grams protein; 2.2 milligrams calcium; 0.4 milligram iron.
Age: 18-23 months
Ingredients:
1 cup (235 ml) water
3 tablespoons (12 g) uncooked stelline (star-shaped) pasta
1 tablespoon (9 g) raisins
1/4 cup (60 ml) whole milk
Fruit of choice
Yield: 1 toddler serving, or 1/2 cup (115 grams)
Stovetop method: Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the pasta and raisins.
Simmer, uncovered and stirring occasionally, 10 minutes until the pasta is just tender. Drain. Add the milk and fruit of choice.
Each serving (not including fruit of choice) contains: 121.9 calories; 2.2 grams total fat; 1.2 grams saturated fat; 6.1 milligrams cholesterol; 27.8 milligrams sodium; 21.6 grams carbohydrates; 1.5 grams dietary fiber; 4.0 grams protein; 80.6 milligrams calcium; 0.8 milligrams iron; 6.62 IU vitamin A; and 16.8 milligrams vitamin C.
Age: 7 months
Ingredients:
1/2 small butternut squash
2 tablespoons (28 ml) water
Yield: 4 baby servings, 21/2 tablespoons (35 to 40 grams) each
Microwave method: Seed and peel squash and cut half lengthwise.
Place in microwave-safe dish, add water, and cover.
Microwave on high 8 to 10 minutes, until soft.
Allow mixture to cool slightly and then puree in a blender 30 seconds.
Add a little breast milk or formula if wanted to achieve the desired consistency.
