Duty callsTue, January 6, 2009 @ 10:19AM We may not like it, but there are some things that we as adults have to do. One of them is showing up for jury duty when called. Yes, there are often circumstances that warrant an excuse. And the system accommodates that. But for those without valid excuses, to just ignore the call is not right. Phil Ray's story on A1 today highlights the problem in Blair County. There were 114 no-shows for Monday's criminal court jury selection. 114! The jury commissioners are understandably upset and are looking for help from the courts to rectify the situation. J.D. Cavrich's photo on A1 today of the Hollidaysburg borough employee taking down holiday decorations is a poke right at me -- my decorations are still up! I have to get moving to get them stowed away until December. I just hate the thought of seeing them gone. They bring more than color and whimsy to my home -- they make everything seem magical and bring a fierce sense of hope.

Yah, For Bad Weather!Tue, January 6, 2009 @ 9:22PM Yah…a night off!! I LOVE bad weather. Activities get cancelled, and I smell freedom! We picked the kids up after school today because my husband and I happened to get the day off together which meant goodbye to the Christmas tree…and hello to the house smelling like pine every time I vacuum for the next few weeks. Our sweeper must have a bad filter or something because whatever gets sucked up reinvents itself through the air blowing out of the sweeper. Thank God it’s only pine, because there have been many times it’s been worse…times I’m not going to mention for the sake of our readers! Anyway, our kids have almost an hour bus trip home after school, so in bad weather we pick them up when possible. We came home to homework and dinner then went shopping. That’s another reason that I love bad weather…no one goes out. We practically had the mall to our selves, and I usually hate the mall.
