In a prior post (In Which We Discuss Exercise) I listed several ideas for working in some working out during your typical mom day with your kids. I forgot an extremely effective one. Jumping. On. The. Bed.
You read it correctly. I have to be honest I hesitated to share this one with you, dear readers. First of all, how many times do we repeat "No more monkeys jumping on the bed" to our children? We don't want them to fall and we don't want the bed to break. But admit it, it looks like fun. Eve thinks it's fun and we happen to have a bed that is currently a mattress and box spring on the floor at the moment.
There she was doing the Mr. Crazy Dance, as she calls it. "C'mon Mama," said she. How could I resist? That is how I came to realize that jumping on the bed is still super fun AND a terrific work out. When you are little and your legs are shorter (and you exercise all the time without even knowing it) you don't feel it in the backs of your legs as you land on the bed and then spring up. When you are... um, my age, you feel it. It's great fun and it's quite the work out. I don't know how I'm going to explain it to my neighbors someday when Eve is in school all day and they spy me, airborne, in the second story window, but I'll come up with something. It will be totally worth it when I look as toned and healthy as a five year old!
Next time your little one starts the Mr. Crazy Dance, hop in. Your kids will remember it and you'll get some much needed exercise without even having to face the treadmill at the gym. What are your household exercise secrets?
