Happy Birthday Dad!
January 30, 2013 - Kristy MacKaben
There is one birthday that sticks out in the mind of my 68-year-old father. My dad was the youngest of five children, one of whom was my dad's twin sister (my aunt Jeanne). Growing up in the small town of Meadeville in the 1950s, my dad and his siblings didn't celebrate their birthdays elaborately. A chocolate cake and a present from mom and dad were usually the extent of birthdays. But, the year my dad and his sister turned 8 it was different. After spending a normal Saturday at the YMCA, Dad and Aunt Jeanne returned home to a full blown surprise party, courtesy of my uncle Wayne, their teenage brother. Wayne had gathered a dozen of their friends and performed a puppet show for the younger children, followed by cake and plenty of presents. It was one of the happiest birthdays my dad remembers, and he still feels grateful to his brother Wayne. Today is my dad's 68th birthday, and he told me that story for the first time today. And it got me thinking about how everyone deserves to feel special on their birthday, no matter their age. So, today we tried to make Dad feel special. He and my mom are visiting from Maryland. We went to a fun little airplane-themed restaurant for lunch, had a great dinner, followed by chocolate cake tonight, and a pile of presents (most of which were handmade by the kids.) Hope Dad's birthday was a good one.
