Is it ever Ok to let your kids skip school? Most schools have policies against taking vacation time while school is in session. Scott and I take school seriously, and we rarely keep Julie home from school for frivolous reasons. But, last Friday Julie played hooky. Scott took Julie to California to a family Christmas party. In this case, I think the trip was more important than school. We rarely see all our family in California, and the annual Christmas party (which we haven't made it to in 3 years) is a big deal. It's the one time every year all of Scott's family members gather together. Scott and I both felt that spending time with family trumps whatever Julie might learn in school on a Friday in December. Luckily, Julie's teacher was completely understanding, and I think we were right in this instance. Julie spent time with her Grandma, uncles, aunts and cousins, and also her Great Grandma, which she hasn't seen in a year and a half. Some of the best memories I have as a child were spent with all my extended family members. It's so important for Julie to have these moments and create connections with all her family, even though we love far away. Sometimes the most teachable moments happen outside of school. What's your opinion? Do you ever let your kids miss school?
