![]() Stories of a Stay-at-Home MomHow much TV?Ok...parents of preschoolers or even elementary-aged kids, how much TV do you let your kids watch? I've always been pretty anal about letting Julie watch TV. I really didn't let her watch anything until she was 2 and then it was just about 20 minutes of Elmo's World at the end of Sesame Street. When I mean 20 minutes, I mean the TV was never on at all other than that 20 minutes. I'm not a big TV watcher, so it was never a big deal for me. The TV was off all day until Scott got home, and turned it on. I don't know what he'd do without it! Scott's not one to just relax in a quiet room. The TV always has to be on, whether it's sports, the History channel or cooking shows. (That's definitely a bone of contention.) Anyway, I have to admit I've gotten much more lax about the whole TV watching thing. Johnny really hasn't watched any TV yet, and doesn't seem too interested. Julie on the other hand would probably watch it all day if I let her. This summer I've been letting her watch at least an hour a day (a few mornings, the TV time even stretched to 2 hours) while I try and get work done. Usually Julie entertains herself perfectly, playing for hours with Barbies or dolls, lost in her own little world. I swear. The minute I get on the phone, there's some type of emergency I need to tend to. Obviously, it's her way of getting attention, but it's so frustrating! There's nothing worse than trying to interview someone on the phone for an article to be interrupted by "Mommy I accidentally got pee on my panties!!" (real story!) So, it's much easier to just let her watch a little TV. I know you're not supposed to use TV as a babysitter, but sometimes it really is the only solution. I can't help but feel a little guilty though. I know it's only an hour or so a day, but still. I always feel like she could be doing something better with her time. She's heading back to school soon, and I feel like I should be spending quality time with her. (Not like we don't do fun things every day, but I feel like every moment counts.) Another bad thing is some evenings when I'm running or doing something else, Scott will let her watch more TV. So, my question for you, moms and dads is: how much TV is too much? Should it be limited to a certain time amount each day? Is a little TV every day a bad thing?
