Black, White and Read All Over

Fourth of July fireworks

If you missed the list of firework shows that ran on the Life cover Sunday, it appears again on A2 today. There are several shows Saturday and one on Sunday. Let's hope the weather cooperates!

The story on D1 today about the high number of teens who think they will die young is really disturbing. The study challenges what many of us think -- that kids do risky things because they think they're invincible. The study author said many teens may instead be taking chances "because they feel hopeless and figure that not much is at stake." That's truly depressing news.

If you have kids in junior high or senior high, enter them in the Back to School Makeover contest. They can win a haircut, clothes and gift certificates if they're chosen as the winner! See the entry form on D3.

Local businesses are pitching in to help kids who might not have all of the necessary school supplies at back-to-school time. They're doing a "Stuff the Bus" school supply drive. That's a really clever idea. People can donate all sorts of things, from crayons to kids scissors to flash cards to backpacks. See the list of needed items and donation locations on D2.

The Cove Factory Outlet is offering all ladies sandals at half off on Friday. See the ad on D6.
